Egypt’s Population Growth Hits Record Low of 1.4% in 2023: Impact and Challenges Ahead
Egypt’s population growth has reached its lowest rate in decades, with a slowdown to 1.4% in 2023. With 106 million inhabitants, Egypt is the most populous country in the Arab world.
The decrease is good news for the government, as President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has warned about the burden of the birth rate on public finances and government services.
However, 60% of the population lives near the poverty line, and the country faces an infrastructure deficit in schools and hospitals. To curb the demographic push, the authorities launched the 2019 campaign “Deux, c’est assez” (Two is enough).
