Urgent Humanitarian Crisis in Northern Ethiopia: 50,000 Displaced, Women and Children in Desperate Need

Over 50,000 individuals have been displaced due to conflicts in a contested region in northern Ethiopia. The UN has highlighted the critical humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for extensive support, particularly for women and children.

Recent armed confrontations in Alamata Town, Raya Alamata, Zata, and Ofla have resulted in the displacement of over 50,000 individuals since the recent weekend. During a two-year conflict between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan authorities, Amhara forces took control of Raya Alamata.

The Amhara regional administration has accused the Tigray People’s Liberation Front of unlawfully entering Raya Alamata and other regions with disputed identities.

Calling for dialogue, the Amhara regional administration has urged for de-escalation and the protection of civilians. Additionally, they have urged the Tigray People’s Liberation Front to fully comply with the Pretoria agreement and withdraw from the areas under their control.
