Nigerian Woman Faces Cyberstalking Charges Linked to Business Dispute, Remanded in Correctional Centre

Chioma Okoli, a Nigerian woman, faced arraignment at the Federal High Court in Abuja on May 28, 2024, charged with conspiracy and cyberstalking. Okoli entered a plea of not guilty and was held in Suleja Correctional Centre until May 31, 2024, for a bail hearing. Her legal representative, Inibehe Effiong, mentioned that Okoli had experienced a miscarriage, resulting in the loss of her child.

The CEO of Erisco Foods, Eric Omeofia, claimed that his business was adversely affected by a negative product review from a customer named Chioma Egodi. Okoli’s arrest in September 2023 raised concerns about the violation of her rights by the police and Omeofia.

Okoli is accused of engaging in conspiracy and cyberstalking. The allegations suggest that she conspired to distribute false messages on Facebook, with the intention of inciting the public against Erisco Foods Limited, causing inconvenience, danger, and emotional distress to the company, its management, and relatives. This act is in violation of Section 27 (1) (B) of the Cyber Crime Prohibition Act and is subject to legal consequences.
