Lewis Latimer Howard The Man Who Invented Carbon Filament
This is the story of Lewis Latimer Howard, the Man who Invented the Carbon Filament, the very man behind the invention of Electricity.
Lewis Latimer, an African American innovator, was the genius behind the carbon filament for the light bulb, which revolutionized the way people illuminated their environments. Before his pioneering invention, most relied on traditional candles and oil lamps, which only provided short-term light and were prone to burning out quickly.
As technology progressed, the concept of using electricity to produce light emerged. Latimer dedicated himself to this developing field and ultimately devised a solution—he developed the “Process of Manufacturing Carbons,” introducing a durable carbon filament. When powered by electricity, this filament produced light, marking a significant breakthrough in lighting technology.
In 1881, Latimer’s carbon filament invention was integral to illuminating Broadway in New York City, between 14th and 34th streets. His accomplishments in the United States also led him to Brixton, London, where he played a role in lighting the iconic Electric Avenue, spreading this groundbreaking advancement across the Atlantic.
Latimer’s influence extended far beyond the carbon filament. He secured patents for numerous electric lighting innovations, including the electric lamp, Carbon Arc Lighting, and supports for lamps, cementing his status as a pivotal figure in the evolution of electrical engineering and modern lighting.
