Honoring Africa’s Distinctive Wildlife for World Animal Month
Every 4th of October, the world celebrate Animal day. Africa as the true heartland of the world, has of some of the planet’s most extraordinary wildlife. Here are Five Remarkable Creatures You Might Not Know About in Africa.
Africa boasts some of the world’s most captivating and rare animals, and today, I’d like to introduce you to five astounding creatures that you might or might not have encountered before.
First on the list is the Okapi. This shy creature, native to the Democratic Republic of Congo, is often referred to as the “forest giraffe.” With legs striped like a zebra’s and a body resembling a giraffe’s, it’s quite a wonder to picture! Unlike its taller cousin, the Okapi has a shorter neck, but it possesses an exceptionally long tongue—so lengthy, in fact, that it can even reach its own eyes!
Next is the Gelada Baboon, found solely in Ethiopia. What makes it special? It’s the only primate that primarily consumes grass. The Gelada has a unique patch of bare skin on its chest, known as the “bleeding heart.” Interestingly, this area changes color depending on the baboon’s social ranking, making it a remarkable creature to study.
Then there’s the Shoebill Stork, which thrives in the marshy wetlands of East Africa, including Uganda, South Sudan, and Zambia. This bird seems as if it stepped straight out of a prehistoric era. With its large, shoe-shaped bill and imposing stature, some have even dubbed it a “bird from the age of giants.”
Another intriguing creature is the Aardvark, found in sub-Saharan Africa across savannas, grasslands, and woodlands. With a snout reminiscent of a pig’s and a long, sticky tongue, the aardvark excels at feasting on ants and termites, making it one of nature’s most efficient pest controllers.
Finally, we have the Gerenuk, also called the “Giraffe Gazelle.” Found in East Africa, particularly in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, this long-necked gazelle is known for balancing on its hind legs to reach leaves on trees—a trait that sets it apart from other antelope species.
So there you have it—five remarkable animals from the enchanting continent of Africa, each with its own extraordinary features and allure.
