Kagame Poised for Fourth Term Victory in Rwandan Election
Rwandan President Paul Kagame is poised to secure a fourth term in Monday’s election, competing against two opposition candidates. Kagame, known for leading the rebel movement that halted the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, garnered nearly 99% of the vote in the 2017 election after term limits were abolished. His potential reelection may indicate continued stability but will likely draw international scrutiny over alleged rights violations and strained relations with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Despite receiving accolades for Rwanda’s post-genocide reconstruction and economic growth, Kagame’s administration has faced censure from Western powers and activists for suppressing media, targeting political opponents, and supporting rebel factions in Congo. Rwanda’s decision to host asylum seekers from the UK in a 2022 migration agreement further heightened global attention.
The Rwandan government refutes all allegations and vows to maintain progress and security. With over 9 million registered voters, the upcoming polls will also select members of the 80-seat lower house of parliament, with preliminary results anticipated by July 20.
