South Sudan Schools Set to Reopen Amid Heatwave Concerns
South Sudan’s government announced that schools will reopen next week after a two-week closure due to extreme heat across the country.
The health and education ministries predict that temperatures will drop, with the rainy season set to begin soon. South Sudan has experienced climate change-related adverse effects, with temperatures reaching 45 degrees Celsius.
Teachers are advised to minimize playground activities, ventilate classrooms, provide water during school hours, and monitor children for signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Health Minister Yolanda Awel Deng identified Northern Bahr El-Ghazel, Warrap, Unity, and Upper Nile states as the most affected areas. Higher learning institutions have remained open.
