The Askaris African Soldiers Who Fought In The World War 2

On Tuesday, 2nd of September 1945, World War 2 ended, but did you know that African soldiers also fought in that war?
When Germany invaded Poland on the 1st of September 1939 hundreds of thousands of African soldiers known as Askaris in British ranks and Tirailleurs Senegalais under the French took up arms to fight a war that wasn’t ever their own.
Here are just a few of these brave soldiers
*Addi Bâ Mamadou from Guinea
who the Germans nick named “the black terrorist” and while being executed by the Naxis refused to betray his comrades.
*Bankole Vivour from Nigeria The grand father of Rhodes Vivour, who after being aware of Germany’s actions in Namibia joined the Royal Airforce to fight Hitler he lost his life during a bombing mission over Nuremberg.
*Job Maseko who was a South African soldier during world war two, serving in the native military corps as part of the south African 2nd infantry division even while being captured by the Germans managed to sink a German ship, these soldiers endured hardship and harsh conditions but their contributions and commitments were met with discrimination, suffering and hardship.
Oh but there is a bright side,
These brave soldiers laid the ground work for the independence movement that would revamp africa forever yet their stories remain largely undisclosed. Here is the thing, they may have fought for the liberation of there colonial rulers while their own countries remained vanquished but there legacy is one of a fierce desire for a sovereignty that would finally be theirs.
