12 Charged with Treason in Sierra Leone Coup Attempt

Sierra Leone authorities have charged 12 individuals with treason following a failed coup in November 2023, including former President Ernest Bai Koroma’s security detail.

The incident involved a gun attack on military barracks and a prison, resulting in the release of around 2,200 inmates and the tragic loss of over 20 lives.

Also, the accused including ex-police and correctional officers and former Koroma bodyguard Amadu Koita, were arraigned before a magistrate court in Freetown.

Meanwhile, the government has previously claimed the coup was led by Koroma’s bodyguards. Koroma was summoned for questioning in December as part of the police investigation.
