30 Illegal Miners Missing in a Zambian Mudslide

Zambian emergency services have been unable to locate around thirty illegal miners who were missing for two days in a mudslide in the Chingola region.

The Minister of the Interior announced that the miners were trapped in a torrent of mud caused by torrential rains in an open-cast copper mine.

Zambian Vice-President Mutale Nalumango described the situation as a “catastrophe” and stated that the search was concentrated in three locations at the artisanal mining site.

The police have communicated the names of seven missing miners, but the list is not exhaustive.

Zambia is one of the largest copper producers in the world, and the Chingola region has one of the largest open-cast copper mines in the world.
