6-Month Transition Plan Proposed by Algeria to Niger

Instead of the three-year period advocated by Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, Algeria has offered a six-month transition phase for Niger’s military authorities before restoring constitutional and democratic order.

General Abdourahamane Tiani, Niger’s new strongman, has called for a three-year transition phase.

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf stated that the process might be finished in six months, preventing the current coup from becoming a “fait accompli.”

Algeria proposes six months of political talks, with the involvement and approval of all parties in Niger, without exception, and under the supervision of a civil authority.

The minister repeated Algeria’s opposition to any armed intervention in its neighbouring country, calling it “catastrophic” and threatening to push thousands more Nigerians into migration.
