Niger Coup: ECOWAS Seeks AU, UN Support, Warns Mali, Others

ECOWAS warns Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea not to support Niger’s junta after the overthrow of President Bazoum’s government in a coup on July 26th.
The information is in the communique from the second summit of Western African leaders held on Thursday.
The regional bloc sought the aid of the United Nations and African Union to back up the summit’s decisions.
On Thursday, leaders gathered to discuss the situation in Niger following the coup that ousted President Bazoum.
The ultimatum given to the coup leaders by ECOWAS expired on Sunday without any favourable response from the military junta.
Meanwhile, the military governments of Burkina Faso and Mali have warned that we would consider any military intervention against the coup leaders in Niger a “declaration of war” against their nations.

Guinea’s President Mamady Doumbouya has also expressed disagreement with the sanctions recommended by ECOWAS, including military intervention.

Bola Tinubu, the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stressed the need to prioritise diplomatic negotiations and dialogue in resolving the political crisis in the Republic of Niger. He noted that all diplomatic efforts made by ECOWAS, in resolving the crisis, have been defiantly repelled by the military leadership of the Republic of Niger.
