Over 60 Dead After Migrant Boat Sinks Off Cape Verde

A pirogue that departed the coast of Senegal in July and was discovered off the coast of Cape Verde on Monday is thought to have carried more than 60 bodies of dead migrants. Authorities in Cape Verde were notified after the boat was discovered in the Atlantic by a Spanish fishing boat.

With the exception of one Bissau-Guinean, the boat carried 101 passengers, all of them were Senegalese. As a result, 56 individuals are listed as missing. In regards to what transpired after the pirogue departed on July 10, the authorities have remained silent.

98% of the pirogue’s passengers, according to Moda Samb, a local councilman from Fass Boye, were from that region. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Senegal is working hard to repatriate its citizens as soon as feasible.

In the middle of January, some 90 migrants from Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Sierra Leone had already been saved in Cape Verdean waters. Senegal has recently experienced multiple catastrophes related to migration, including the sinking of a boat close to Dakar and the deaths of 13 Senegalese citizens off the coast of Morocco.
