NLC Strike Takes toll on Government Offices in States

In response to the hardships faced by Nigerians as a result of the removal of the petrol subsidy, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its member unions have declared a two-day warning strike. The Federal Capital Territory, the Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa states were also affected by the strike, which started on Tuesday. The withdrawal of the fuel subsidy, according to NLC President Joe Ajaero, is a direct attack on Nigeria’s working-class populace and poor people.

In Abuja: The management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has acknowledged the widespread power outage as a result of the strike  and urged customers to adopt appropriate safety measures to manage it.

In Akwa Ibom: All government offices, including the court headquarters, were closed to the public in Akwa Ibom, which severely hindered government operations in Uyo, the state capital. Government employees stayed home from work, and the scenario was the same at the civil service secretariat on Abak Road.

In Anambra: Workers left their workplaces in Anambra State in accordance with the labour union. The state chairman Emeka Nwafor, together with other labour leaders, put up warning signs at the gates to several ministries and agencies. Together with their peers across the nation, they pressured the federal government to deal with both their problems and those of the general populace.

In Bauchi: The state secretariat in Bauchi was shut by the trade union, preventing anyone from entering. NLC state chairman Ibrahim Maikudi claimed that in response to the strike, the secretariat’s entry was locked at precisely 7:00am. In Lagos, however, there was only a partial observance of the strike because most government offices were open, employees showed up for work, and commercial banks and other private businesses were open for business.

Meanwhile, Ajaero announced that the strike will continue on Wednesday and urged workers to remain steadfast and determined.
