Bazoum Seeks Reinstatement Through Regional Court

Mohamed Bazoum, the deposed president of Niger, is seeking his release and restoration of constitutional order in the country.

Bazoum, who was held captive by soldiers who carried out a coup d’état two months ago, has filed a petition with the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) alleging arbitrary arrest and violation of freedom of movement.

His lawyer, Maître Seydou Diagne, believes that his clients have the right to seek justice through the legal system and hopes that a favorable decision will lead to the immediate restoration of constitutional order and Bazoum’s return to power until the end of his mandate in 2026.

The State of Niger has a legal obligation to comply with the decision. The Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) is still threatening military intervention to restore constitutional order, but has not taken action.

The European Union (EU) has expressed its support for Ecowas and called for the immediate release of Bazoum and his family, emphasizing that it does not recognize the authorities resulting from the coup.
