Survivors of Libya’s Deadly Flood Struggle for Daily Needs

Derna, Libya, has experienced devastating floods that claimed thousands of lives. Survivors, including Shoukry Mohamed, have faced numerous challenges as they try to recover from the disaster. The city was hit hard by heavy rains, causing a wall of water to flood entire neighborhoods and even swept people out to sea. Estimates of the death toll vary, with government officials and aid agencies reporting anywhere from 4,000 to over 11,000 fatalities.

The aftermath of the disaster has left around 40,000 people displaced, with 30,000 in Derna alone. Some have sought refuge in neighboring cities, relying on local communities’ generosity, while others are housed in schools. Local authorities have taken steps to isolate the worst-impacted area to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. Health authorities have launched a vaccination campaign targeting search and rescue teams and children in Derna and other affected areas as a precaution.

Despite the efforts made to help survivors recover and rebuild their lives, more needs to be done to address the ongoing challenges and provide support to those affected by this tragic event.
