“Fuel Subsidy is Organised Crime” – Peter Obi

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has referred to fuel subsidy as a form of organised crime. Obi made this statement on Monday while speaking on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ where he discussed his views on how to resolve the impending strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

In response to the question of what approach he would have taken differently, Obi said that fuel subsidy should be removed as it is a corrupt and criminal act. He further explained that his approach would have been to remove the corrupt and criminal elements in the system and reduce excess demand which would result in a 50% reduction in fuel subsidy. The remaining 50% would then be allocated for critical development projects.

Obi expressed his optimism about Nigeria’s future and believes that with the right leadership, the country can prosper. He also added that the gains from removing fuel subsidy should be invested in important sectors to further boost the country’s development.
