Tuareg Rebels Seize Another Military Bases in Mali

In recent weeks, the northern Tuareg rebels in Mali have seized five military bases from the Malian Army, including the latest conquest in Taoussa.

These rebels, who make up the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), have been fighting for autonomy and government attention for the semi-nomadic Tuareg people.

Despite signing a peace deal in 2015, tensions resurfaced after two military coups in 2020 and 2021, the involvement of Russian military contractors, and the withdrawal of French forces and U.N. peacekeepers. In addition to the attack on Taoussa, the CMA also targeted a military base near Tarkint on Wednesday.
