President of South Sudan Fires Police Chief Amidst Coup Rumors

South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has dismissed Inspector-General of Police Gen. Majak Akec Balok amid rumors of a coup attempt.

The decision comes after unrest within the presidential guards and the National Security Service, with around 27 officers arrested.

Balok was appointed in February 2018 and previously served as the director-general of nationality, passport, and immigration.

President Kiir has also appointed Lt. Gen. Atem Marol Biar as the new Inspector-General of Police.

The dismissal and appointment of Biar are part of a series of changes to South Sudan’s security sector, as the country grapples with political instability and violence.
