Just In: Gov. Obaseki Spends N670million On Meals & More

A news report on Sahara Reporters has revealed that the Edo State government, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, has recorded a total of N973,475,295.69 in bank charges between January and June 2023.
The government also spent N296,390,714.00 on publicity and advertisements.

The report further states that the budget performance report shows that the government spent N425,768,967.40 on meals and refreshments, N254,577,158.27 on cooking gas, and N212,899,175 on welfare.

It will be recalled that his 2023 budget, titled “Budget of Resilience and Transformation,” had a capital expenditure of N192bn and a recurrent expenditure of N127.5bn. However, a civil society group, the Empowerment for Unemployed Youth Initiative (EUYI), has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of the diversion of a World Bank loan and other funds intended to improve the education system in the state.

EUYI argues that the state of public education in the state, despite billions of Naira budgeted in the past seven years, is a social menace.
