Kenya’s President Warns of Climate Crisis in Eastern Africa

Kenya’s President William Ruto warned of a “disastrous turn of events” in Eastern Africa, following the most severe drought in over 40 years.

The region has experienced catastrophic flooding, resulting in over 200 fatalities and tens of thousands of displacements in Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia.

Ruto attributed the extreme weather events to human-induced climate change, with droughts now at least 100 times more likely in parts of Africa than in the pre-industrial era.

He urged swift and inclusive action to address the imbalance and appealed to the global community, particularly developed nations, to contribute millions of dollars to help mitigate the climate crisis.

Africa produces less than 3% of greenhouse gases but bears a disproportionate burden in the global climate crisis.
