Financial Crisis Hits Nigerian Embassies

Nigerian embassies have been facing a cash crunch due to the delay in the release of their capital and overhead votes by the Federal Government.

The embassies have been unable to support full operations and have been unable to meet their financial obligations to staff members and local contractors.

Many embassies have been forced to work shifts as they cannot support full operations. The situation has not improved since last year, with allocations to embassies around the world not being paid since June 2023.

Staff members are now indebted, unable to feed or pay their children’s school fees. Some staff are seeking help from friends and families in Nigeria, while others are working in shifts as the embassies cannot support full operations.

Efforts to contact the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy have been unsuccessful.
