Lagos State Bans Styrofoam and Single-Use Plastics
Lagos State in Nigeria has imposed a ban on the use and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics. The decision was made due to the environmental impact of indiscriminate styrofoam usage, which clogged drainage channels daily.
Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab directed the State Waste Management Authority and Kick Against Indiscipline to implement the ban, clamping down on production companies and distribution outlets.
He advised producers, distributors, and end-users to take the ban seriously and find alternatives or risk heavy fines and penalties, including property sealing.
He also warned that they could bear the costs of daily cleanup from roads and drainage channels. The commissioner advised consumers and residents to boycott styrofoam packs and adopt reusable containers and water bottles for their food and drinks.
