Ghanaian President Sacks Finance Minister in Cabinet Reshuffle

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has sacked his finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, in a cabinet reshuffle ahead of December elections.

Ofori-Atta was responsible for Ghana’s debt restructuring after the West African gold, oil, and cocoa producer defaulted on most of its external debt in December 2022.

Inflation rose above 50% that year, and the local cedi currency plummeted. The sacking has affected 12 other ministers of state, with information minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah being deployed to the housing ministry and his deputy Fatimatu Abubakar replacing him.

Ambrose Dery, who held the interior minister portfolio, has been re-assigned to the president’s office. Akufo-Addo’s second and last term in office will end in 2025.
