Urgent Appeal for Peace: DSS Calls for Dialogue Over Protests in Nigeria

The Department of State Services (DSS) has urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to avoid nationwide protests on February 27 and 28 due to the rising cost of living and hardship. The DSS recognises the labour movement’s legitimate right to protest, but urges organised labour to refrain from protesting in the interests of peace and public order.

Also, the DSS calls on parties to pursue dialogue and negotiation rather than engaging in conduct that could heighten tensions. The DSS also emphasises the need to protect and maintain internal stability and unity, as ongoing wars have catastrophic repercussions on affected countries’ domestic environments.

Citizens are encouraged to exercise authority in protecting their children and wards from harmful acts that endanger public safety and harmony. All sectors, including political parties, opposition groups, religious and traditional institutions, civil society, and non-governmental bodies, are called upon to eschew violence and demonstrate leadership and statesmanship in these challenging times.

The DSS stands opposed to violence as a means of settling current economic, political, or other challenges and will work with sister security and law enforcement agencies to ensure lasting peace in the country.
