UK to Pay $470 Million to Relocate Asylum Seekers to Rwanda: Controversy Surrounds Scheme
Rwanda is set to receive at least $470 million from the UK as part of a plan to relocate asylum seekers to the country.
The UK’s National Audit Office (NAO) revealed that up to $190,000 will be paid for each person sent to Rwanda over a five-year period.
However, the UK government has been criticized for its transparency over the cost of the scheme, which has been halted by protests, lawsuits, and Supreme Court rulings.
The UK and Rwanda signed a new treaty in Kigali, Rwanda, in December, allowing the UK to send individuals arriving in the country illegally to Rwanda to claim asylum.
