Ghana’s Controversial LGBTQ+ Rights Bill: Threats and Opposition

The “Promotion of proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values” bill has sparked controversy in Ghana. The bill broadens the scope of criminal sanctions against LGBTQ+ individuals and threatens criminal penalties against perceived allies.

Some Ghanaians argue that the bill goes too far, as it goes against the constitution and criminalizes public displays of affection between LGBTQ+ individuals and disbands existing LGBTQ groups.

The Civil Society Organization (CDD) Ghana Chairperson, Audrey Gadzekpo, believes it is an absolute non necessity and that it should be tested against the constitution. Those convicted could face up to a decade in prison.

The CDD and the Human Rights Coalition have petitioned the Supreme Court, and the UN has urged the bill not to become law. The bill is currently on President Nana Akufo Addo’s desk.
