MEET KELECHI NDUKWE: THE FIRST NIGERIAN TO COMMAND THE US NAVY WARSHIP
In a ground-breaking achievement, Kelechi Ndukwe has become the first Nigerian-American to command a US Navy warship, marking the pinnacle of his illustrious 20-year career.
Recently promoted to Navy Captain, Ndukwe’s journey began in 2003 as an auxiliaries officer, following his master’s degree in national security and strategy studies from the US Naval War College.
This prestigious milestone follows his appointment in 2021 as the first Nigerian-American to serve as Commanding Officer of the USS Halsey (DDG-97),a cutting-edge Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer.
Before his current role, Ndukwe had already proven his leadership within the Navy. From 2013 to 2015, he commanded the USS Devastator (MCM 6), a minesweeper based in Bahrain.
His distinguished service includes deployments on various warships across the Mediterranean Sea, Horn of Africa, Arabian Gulf, and Western Pacific Ocean.
This promotion recognises Ndukwe’s exceptional leadership, dedication, and service to the US Navy, solidifying his position as a role model and inspiration to future generations.
