A Meeting of Minds in Accra: The Powerful Synergy of Malcolm X and Maya Angelou

In 1964, the historic city of Accra, Ghana, became the backdrop for a profound meeting between two towering figures of the civil rights era: Malcolm X and Maya Angelou. During this pivotal visit, Malcolm X articulated a bold vision to establish the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU). His ambitious blueprint aimed to elevate the struggles of African Americans to the global stage, formally appealing to the United Nations to intervene against systemic racial oppression. This revolutionary concept electrified the expatriate community of African Americans living in Ghana. Inspired by the potential of the movement, Angelou felt a powerful calling to return to the United States to help build the foundation of this new organization.

A Rare Glimpse Into Their Correspondence

The deep mutual respect between these two icons is beautifully preserved in the final letter Malcolm X sent to Angelou. Written with a blend of warmth, humor, and sharp intellect, the letter offers a rare, intimate look into their camaraderie:

Dear Maya,

I was shocked and surprised when your letter arrived but I was also pleased because I only had to wait two months for this one whereas previously I had to wait almost a year. You see I haven’t lost my wit. (smile)

Your analysis of our people’s tendency to talk over the head of the masses in a language that is too far above and beyond them is certainly true. You can communicate because you have plenty of (soul) and you always keep your feet firmly rooted on the ground.

I am enclosing some articles that will give you somewhat of an idea of my daily experiences here and you will then be better able to understand why it sometimes takes me a long time to write. I was most pleased to learn that you might be hitting in this direction this year. You are a beautiful writer and a beautiful woman. You know that I will always do my utmost to be helpful to you in any way possible so don’t hesitate.

Signed

Your brother Malcolm

Understanding the Legacy of Their Bond

This exchange highlights a critical critique of the liberation movements of the time: the tendency for leaders to use academic or lofty rhetoric that alienated everyday citizens. Malcolm X deeply admired Angelou’s rare gift for grounding profound truths in the authentic, soulful language of the people.

Tragically, the massive potential of their planned collaboration in the United States was cut short by Malcolm X’s assassination in 1965, shortly after Angelou returned to assist him. Nevertheless, their brief alignment in Ghana remains a monumental moment in history, illustrating how literature, international diplomacy, and grassroots activism converged in the global fight for human rights.
