Algeria’s Presidential Election Looms with Uncertainty

Algeria is preparing for a presidential election in December, with an aging president and an opposition party that has not yet presented a candidate.

The Rally for Culture and Democracy, one of the few opposition parties maintaining a notable public presence in President Abdelmajid Tebboune’s Algeria, has called on the government to establish political conditions for a debate to find a way out of the crisis.

However, no candidate has stepped forward to challenge Tebboune, who came to power in 2019 and has not announced plans to run for a second term. The country’s leading army general, Said Chengriha, has offered support for Tebboune, praising his projects implemented over the past four years.

The current government’s attempts to fight corruption, revive the economy, and chart a new course for Algeria have not been felt by all, with many Algerians remaining disillusioned and politically disengaged.

The government plans to raise public wages, pensions, and establish an unemployment fund for young people, but calls for political dialogue do not mean they plan to participate or nominate challengers to Tebboune.
