Army Detains Security Forces Leader in Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau’s army has detained the leader of the security forces unit responsible for overnight clashes in the capital, claiming the situation is now under control.

Gunfire erupted during confrontations between national guard and presidential guard special forces. Two government members were released by national guard soldiers, who were questioned by the police.

The two men were taken into custody and questioned about a $10 million withdrawal from state coffers.

Guinea-Bissau has been politically unstable since 1974, having experienced four coups and several attempted coups.

President Umaro Sissoco Embalo appointed Tomas Djassi and Horta Inta as head of presidential security and chief of staff.
