Bandits in Niger State Imposing Taxes on Residents and IDPs

Bandits in Nigeria’s Niger State have reportedly occupied Dogon-Dawa, Kurege, Kangarewa, and Mangoro communities, imposing taxes on residents and some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Residents have been forced to pay N3.5 million levy before vehicles carrying luggage can leave. The bandits have also imposed levies on crops, forcing farmers to pay before harvesting.

The situation has worsened, with even IDPs having to pay certain levies before they can leave.

Vehicles exiting the area are charged N200,000 to N300,000. In some cases, three vehicles combined are required to pay N1 million before leaving.

Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun promised to investigate and provide an update.
