Burkina Faso Thwarts Attempted Coup, Vows to Combat Terrorism

Burkina Faso’s interim government has confirmed that a failed coup attempt was prevented on September 26, 2023, nearly a year after Captain Ibrahim Traoré took control in a coup.

Military soldiers and other alleged participants in the destabilisation attempt have been captured, according to the administration, and others are being vigorously sought after.

Government has expressed disappointment that those sworn to protect their country strayed from their duties to disrupt the progress of the Burkinabe people’s fight for sovereignty and complete liberation from terrorist groups seeking to enslave them.

Thousands of citizens took to the streets of Ouagadougou on Tuesday evening in response to a call from supporters of Captain Traoré to “protect” him against rumors of a possible coup.

Since over ten years ago, the nation has experienced numerous horrific terrorist assaults, the majority of which have occurred in the region known as the “three borders” with Niger and Mali.

In response, the three countries signed a charter earlier this month to create the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), an alliance aimed at promoting collective defense and mutual assistance.

Despite the government’s efforts in reclaiming previously occupied territories and returning thousands of displaced citizens, jihadist attacks linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State continue to occur regularly in most regions of Burkina Faso.

The interim government reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and continuing their efforts in fighting against terrorist groups.
