Cameroon: Maurice Kamto Re-elected MRC Leader

On Sunday, December 11, the national president of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), Maurice Kamto, the leader of the opposition in Cameroon, was reelected.

With no opposition to his list, he received more than 99% of the vote.

For the two-day convention of the party, MRC militants assembled at the Yaoundé Sports Complex.

The 69-year-old Kamto declared the formation of a coalition with the goal of establishing a peaceful Cameroon in a speech that was partially given in French and English.

The Political Alliance for Change (APC), according to Kamto, will collaborate with Cameroonians from all walks of life, including those who back the country’s existing administration.

All next elections will feature the Cameroon Renaissance Movement again.

This announcement represents a change from the party’s earlier contestation plan. It abstained from participating in the 2020 local and parliamentary elections, which means that it is not represented in the national assembly.

Hundreds of MRC executives and militants were detained in 2019 and 2020 after what UN experts described as nonviolent marches that were violently suppressed.
