CPJ Reports Rise in Incarcerated Journalists in Sub-Saharan Africa

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has reported a rise in incarcerated journalists in sub-Saharan Africa, with a total of 47 as of December 1, 2023.

Eritrea is the leading country in press freedom violations, with 16 journalists behind bars. Ethiopia follows with 8 journalists in detention, while Cameroon has 6.

The report highlights the challenging media environment in Ethiopia.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Stanis Bujakera Tshiamala, a correspondent for Jeune Afrique and Reuters, is incarcerated in a communal cell at Makala prison. CPJ expresses concern about the lack of global attention to the situation.
