East African Summit Addresses Sudan Conflict and Ethiopia-Somalia Dispute

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni hosted the 42nd extraordinary summit of the East African bloc, focusing on the war in Sudan and the dispute between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa.

The presidents of Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya, Djibouti, and Somalia attended. The warring generals didn’t meet in December despite an agreement. IGAD leaders reminded the parties of their commitment and called for a face-to-face meeting within two weeks.

The IGAD Secretariat was directed to revise the roadmap for the Resolution of the Conflict in Sudan and convene Sudanese-led talks on a democratic government.

In the Ethiopia-Somalia crisis, IGAD insisted any agreement should be with the consent of the Federal Government of Somalia.

Sudanese President Yoweri Museveni suspended ties with the IGAD, accusing it of violating Sudan’s sovereignty by inviting the paramilitary leader to the January 18th summit.
