First Country To Gain Independence In Africa

On the 6th of March 1957, the then Gold Coast (now known as Ghana) gained independence from Britain. Ghana became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and was led to independence by Kwame Nkrumah who transformed the country into a republic, with himself as president.

Barely over 65 years ago, on the night of March 6th, 1957, Kwame Nkrumah, the architect of the independence movement, stood before the vast crowd gathered at the old polo grounds in Accra, former until then reserved for the British colonists. He declared: “Ghana, your beloved country, is free forever.” “We have awakened.

Happy independence Ghana, shout out to Kwame Nkrumah the true Liberationist. Thank you Ghana for taking the bold step to attain independence, and thanks for fronting the black race to seek liberation on this day.
