Former Kenyan Minister Detained in Uganda on Gold Smuggling Charges

Kenya’s former Assistant Minister for Internal Security, Stephen Tarus, is being detained in Uganda on charges of smuggling gold using counterfeit documents.

Tarus was arrested last week and is being held in Luzira prison until January 18. The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) alleges that the fraudulent trade documentation resulted in significant financial losses for the Ugandan government.

The charges relate to the forgery of export documents related to 13 kilograms of gold valued at $30,000 (£24,000).

Tarus has not issued any statements regarding the allegations. The case has gained attention due to Tarus’ political background and the severity of the charges.
