Gambian Soldier Sentenced for Coup Attempt on President Barrow

A soldier who led a coup against President Adama Barrow’s administration in 2022 has been convicted to 12 years in jail by the supreme court of the Gambia.

For their part in the attempt, eight soldiers were accused of treason and conspiracy in January.

In addition, charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and concealment of treason were brought against two civilians and one police officer.

Seven people were freed mid-trial after being found not guilty, including the citizens and the cop.

The ringleader, Sanna Fadera, was convicted of treason.

In Gambia, where there have been an increasing number of coup attempts since 2020, these efforts are not unusual.

Fadera has thirty days to challenge the decision. The nation is still in shock from more than 20 years of Yahya Jammeh as president.
