Heatwave Sweeps Johannesburg: Residents Struggle to Cope

South Africa is facing a scorching heatwave due to rising greenhouse gas levels, causing temperatures to rise over the past two weeks.

Local weather experts warn that the heat will persist for more months, prompting authorities to advise people to avoid direct sun exposure.

Residents in Johannesburg, the most populous city, are struggling to cope with the extreme heat, with the elderly, children, and outdoor workers being particularly vulnerable.

Scientists and activists have warned of the consequences of rising greenhouse gas levels, which are now being highlighted at the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai.

Global fossil fuel emissions are expected to reach a record high of 37 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide this year, indicating an irreversible change in the Earth’s system.
