Just In: Military Coup in Gabon As Soldiers Seize Power.

A dozen Gabonese soldiers announced the cancellation of the general elections held on August 26, 2023, as well as the results, claiming to end the current administration and President Ali Bongo Ondimba’s tenure.

The soldiers, acting on behalf of the “Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions,” abolished all institutions of the republic, including the government, Senate, National Assembly, and Constitutional Court.

The announcement was broadcast on Gabon 1 public television, and gunshots were reported in numerous parts of Libreville. The statement came after Bongo, who has been in power for 14 years, won a third term in the election with 64.27 percent of the vote and was overthrown in a military coup.
