Just In: Ondo Governor, Akeredolu Dies After Battling Leukemia

Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has died at the age of 67. He was managed by State House doctors in Lagos due to the inability to fly him abroad.

Akeredolu returned to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany and recently continued another one after being directed by President Bola Tinubu to hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. After returning to Nigeria, Akeredolu stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, and attempted to govern his state from there, leading to public outrage.

On July 9, Akeredolu’s wife, Betty, announced the suspension of activities for her 70th birthday due to unforeseen circumstances beyond her control.

Leukemia is a blood cancer caused by an increase in white blood cells in the body, which crowd out red blood cells and platelets needed for health.

Types include acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Treatment for leukemia can be complex, but some strategies and resources can help make treatment successful.

Symptoms of leukemia include weakness, fatigue, bruising, fever, severe infections, pain in bones or joints, headaches, vomiting, seizures, weight loss, night sweats, shortness of breath, and swollen lymph nodes or organs like the spleen.
