Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai, is dead.
Nigeria is mourning the loss of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai, who has passed away. The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed his death on Thursday via their official X handle, honoring him with a heartfelt tribute. Known affectionately as “Dodo Mayana,” Rufai was celebrated as a giant of Nigerian football, with his legacy enduring “between the sticks and beyond.”
Rufai was a key member of Nigeria’s “golden generation,” earning 65 appearances for the national team. He played a pivotal role in securing Nigeria’s second AFCON title in Tunisia in 1994 and proudly represented his country in both the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup tournaments.
