Labour Party Chairman Granted Bail in Nigeria Amid Controversy

The Nigerian Police Force has granted bail to the detained national chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure. Abure was arrested in Benin City, Edo State, following a petition from the Inspector General of Police in Abuja. The petition accused Abure of using over 60 armed thugs to attack him during a party activity in December 2023. The party’s youth leader, Comrade Eragbe Anselm, claimed that Abure was brutalized and almost killed by the thugs who stole $75,000 in cash and other properties worth N4.9 million from him and his team.

Abure addressed the party’s supporters, expressing gratitude for their solidarity and commitment. He criticized the police for instiguing crises in the party and bringing false accusations against them. He also mentioned that after the general election, they have been trying to instigate crises in the party and bring false accusations against them.

Abure was released on bail, except for the Edo State Chairman Kelly Ogbaloi and the youth leader. He expressed hope that they will be released by early Thursday. He urged the party to continue fighting for the people until they liberate them and emphasized that it is not about capturing power but what one does with it.
