Leader of the Gabonese Junta Declines Presidential Salary

Gen. Brice Oligui Nguema, the head of the military in Gabon, has resigned from his position as president and will now only be paid as the commander of the republican guard.

After President Ali Bongo was removed from office in August, he was appointed as acting president. Nguema was informed of social emergencies and the demands of the Gabonese people, according to a junta official.

President Bongo’s 14-year administration was characterised by financial scandals and corruption.

By eliminating political funds, reducing session allowances, and decreasing lawmakers’ allowances, Nguema also lowered government expenses.

According to Col. Ulrich Manfoumbi, this action appears to have restored the faith of the Gabonese people in the government.
