Mali: Imam Dicko’s Supporters Denounce “Cabal”

Supporters of Malian religious and political figure Imam Mahmoud Dicko have accused an orchestrated cabal against him for his trip to Algeria.

Dicko was a key figure in a protest movement that preceded the fall of civilian president Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, who was overthrown by a military coup in 2020. Dicko is known for his openness to expressing disagreements with the junta, advocating for civilians’ return to power, and mobilizing in a military-controlled environment.

A diplomatic skirmish broke out between Mali and Algeria after President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s reception in Algiers. The Algerian ambassador was summoned by the Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs to raise a protest.

Dicko explained his trip in a video broadcast on social networks, stating that politicians in Bamako initially intended to go to Algeria, but changed their plans to set a trap for him.

CMAS argues that Dicko’s political positions are not linked to hostility against his own country and invites activists, sympathizers, and partners to remain mobilized in defense of his ideals and values.
