Nairobi Building Collapse During Torrential Rain Leaves Multiple Injured

Four individuals were rescued from a collapsed building in the Mathare neighborhood of Nairobi, as reported by the Kenya Red Cross. Three of them were taken to a nearby health facility, while one, who sustained minor injuries, received treatment on-site.

Mathare, housing hundreds of thousands of people and being one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, experienced the overflow of the Mathare River due to heavy rainfall, resulting in casualties and displacing numerous residents.

President William Ruto instructed residents to vacate flood-prone areas, including Mathare, where authorities initiated the demolition of housing structures on illegal riparian land. The five-story building that collapsed had been partially demolished by officials a week earlier, yet some residents chose to remain in their apartments.
