Nigerian Labour Unions Rally Against Soaring Electricity Costs
Nigerian labour unions have organized nationwide protests against recent electricity price hikes after the government removed subsidies.
The unions, consisting of government workers, are picketing public electricity utility offices in major cities to demand action against the price increases aggravating the country’s cost of living crisis.
Some consumers saw electricity rates more than double in April, while the government aims to cut subsidies by $788 million this year.
Protesting workers are dismayed by Nigeria’s persistently unreliable power supply despite the higher prices. Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, emphasized that the country cannot sustain escalating electricity rates, with union members voicing their concerns.
