Nigeria’s President Orders Implementation of 2012 Oronsaye Report for Government Agency Reform

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has ordered the full implementation of the 2012 Stephen Oronsaye report, which outlines the merging, subsuming, scraping, and relocation of several government agencies. The move, announced by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, signifies the government’s commitment to making far-reaching decisions in the interest of Nigeria.

It would be recalled that the Oronsaye report, submitted in 2012, revealed that there are 541 Federal Government parastatals, commissions, and agencies. The report, which was commissioned by then-President Goodluck Jonathan, recommended the reduction of 263 statutory agencies to 161, scrapping 38 agencies, merging 52, and reverting 14 to departments in various ministries.

The report also recommended repealing the law establishing the National Salaries and Wages Commission and taking its functions over by the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Responsibility Commission.

Furthermore, it also advised the Federal Government to merge the nation’s top three anti-corruption agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, and the Code of Conduct Bureau. The implementation of these changes is expected to be completed within 12 weeks.
