NLC, TUC Declare Indefinite Strike Starting Oct 3

Nigeria’s two major labour unions, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), have declared an indefinite strike starting October 3 to force the federal government to address the severe suffering and hardship faced by the people due to the removal of fuel subsidy. Despite government promises to conclude wage awards, the unions have remained firm in their decision to carry out the strike.

The unions have condemned the government’s insensitivity to the plight of the people and the lack of initiative to address the consequences of subsidy removal and other harsh economic policies. They have also condemned the use of police force to suppress their activities and the spread of false information against their leaders on social media.

They call on all workers to withdraw their services from their workplaces from October 3 and for affiliates and state councils to mobilize for street protests and rallies until the government responds positively to their demands. The unions also appeal to all Nigerians to join hands and assist the government in putting the people’s interests at the heart of its policies and programs.
